If you get bit by stdrt.exe...

...Find "Adobe Licensing Console" in Services and kill it. It should be in your running services. On x64 Windows, you must go into the SysWOW64 folder and delete adbcnsl.exe along with the stuff in your Temp folder. There should be red flags when you see the file for the "Adobe" Licensing Service is actually what looks like a Windows Media executable.

Of course, if you never installed anything Adobe, this would be a instant red flag. Unfortunately, we almost all need Flash so it could slip under our radar. Don't let it do that.

After that, run a Combofix to see if the problem is gone.

New Google+ users, if you just enabled it, SECURE YOUR PASSWORD

Apparently Android viruses are actually starting to exploit Google+ to find out your Gmail address. Don't know how it does it, it just does. The problem isn't really big in North America, but in Asia, the problem is huge.

Phones are becoming more and more powerful, and that means it's easier to brute force a simple password. Within 4 days of me signing up for Google+, I got hacked by a phone in Indonesia. (I assume it's Android)

If you're an existing Gmail user, before you join Google+, secure/strengthen your password and turn on 2-step verification! If not, a phone in Asia may be brute forcing your password as we speak.

[RANT] Crash Fortress 2

It's happened so often since the Xmas update that I have to speak up about it.

Valve, your Source Engine is currently flawed in Team Fortress 2 and it's causing massive amounts of people to experience crashes to desktop. There are reports that almost entire servers of players have disconnected at once because of this constant crashing bug that has not been addressed in subsequent updates.

I am a victim of this, crashing almost a dozen times in the past week just trying to play TF2 normally.

I've verified my cache files and did numerous graphics tweaks to try to stabilize it, but it's ALWAYS an issue with the core DLL files. No amount of verifying or graphics settings tweaks can help this.

Can you get so big that you can ignore all these people complaining about crashes and just let it be? The right kind of corporation would say a resounding NO. Unfortunately, the outward looking perspective on Valve at the moment is them not getting to complaints in a timely manner.

/rant.

Update: It's been two weeks since this post was made and nothing's been done about it. All updates were not related to the Source Engine, and that means people are still crashing.

Update #2: An update that supposedly fixed the issue didn't. They made a TF2 client change, but not a Source Engine change.

Connecting to EduRoam at BCIT on a Blackberry Curve 8520

If you have one of those Blackberry Phones that do not have 3G, chances are you are forced to login each time you try to use BCIT's open wireless network. I have a Curve 8520 and suffered from this problem... until now.

There is a network that does not open up a webpage each time it trys to connect. It is called EduRoam. However, you may be clueless as to why if you followed instructions from other post-secondary institutes like SFU the connection just simply refuses to work.

Truth is, BCIT's EduRoam when paired with the Blackberry Curve 8520 has a weird quirk which requires a deviation from instructions on other phones and possibly post-secondary institutions.

Let's start by quoting the steps that are the same as SFU... (from http://www.sfu.ca/itservices/technical/wireless/configuration/configuration_blackberrypearl_eduroam.html)

1. In the menu section, select Manage Connections

2. Select Set up Wi-Fi network

3. Scroll through the info screen if presented

4. Select Manually Add Network

5. Enter eduroam as the network name and select Add

6. Select PEAP as the security type

From then on, the steps are different.

7. Enter your student number/username in the format A00xxxxxx@bcit.ca

8. Enter your password

9. (IMPORTANT) Check the checkbox saying Disable Server Certificate Validation

10. Click Connect

11. If successful, save the profile.

I've tested this in NE1 and SE10 and have confirmed this works on my Blackberry Curve 8520. Other people with 8520s should try this method so you don't have to login everytime.

The Hell of Internship Seeking...

Note/Warning: This is a personal post that shares the hardships that I've been through over the last week or 2 trying to get an internship for a portion of the BCIT course that mandates that you have one.

Well, I started in September by recontacting a contact I knew at Global BC and unfortunately, he said that they weren't able to accommodate me till the middle of October. "No" #1.

Next, I tried places I knew a fellow friend worked at. This was Prime Focus. They already had someone and they were using software I was unfamiliar with. "No" #2.

Next, I tried Finale Editworks. One of the students in our program was there for an internship and I would be coming in after him if they were able to take me in. They already had someone for the time being... "No" #3.

Next, I tried DHX Media Vancouver. This time, I called rather than do it over e-mail. It took a week, but the response was once again a delayed "No" because they couldn't accommodate me. "No" #4.

Next, I tried Atomic Cartoons. My e-mail landed in their spam filter and only a call ended up in an e-mail response that they weren't able to fit me in. "No" #5.

Next, I tried Proshow AV. This is an equipment rental place. I got a response that they weren't able to get it organized in such a short time period. Chances are so slim for this to happen on the final week that for now it has to be "No" #6.

Next, with instructor assistance, I was able to get hold of the place I wish to work for once I graduate in June: Greedy Productions. I got a response, and it was a No... for now. This meant that my Semester 4 internship could be lined up now. It all depends. 1st "Maybe for later on."

Next, I tried CTV with instructor assistance. I was able to get responses, but once again, it was that they weren't able to fit in someone... "No" #7

Next, I tried Force Four Entertainment through a previous year's grad and that is currently still in progress. No word back for a while though. For now, it's "No" #8.

Next, with instructor assistance, I'm waited for word back from Citytv/OMNI. Unfortunately, they don't take people on short notice... "No" #9.

Everyone else in my production group has one, and I don't.

I will be going into my 3rd week internshipless and will be the only person so far that never got an internship during an industry rotation. Fuck my life.
